Randall Small is a Professor and Director of Biology Teaching and Learning in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He holds a Ph.D. from Iowa State University (1999) and specializes in Plant Systematics and Molecular Evolution. His research focuses on the plant family Malvaceae, particularly Hibiscus and Sarraceniaceae, using DNA sequence analyses to explore phylogenetic relationships, polyploid speciation, and biogeography. He also investigates gene family evolution in cotton (Gossypium) and Arabidopsis.
Key research themes include reconstructing species relationships through phylogenetics, evaluating character evolution, and studying hybridization dynamics in plants and animals. His work integrates molecular data with population genetics and phylogeography. Notable projects include studies on pitcher plants (Sarracenia), Prunus plums, and the genetic basis of agamospermy in Eupatorium. He collaborates across disciplines, addressing topics like microcystin gene origins in cyanobacteria and conservation genetics of gartersnakes.
His publications span over two decades, emphasizing methodological advancements in chloroplast DNA analysis and phylogenetic inference. He mentors students in diverse plant groups, including Sarracenia, Gratiola, and Apiaceae. His lab’s findings contribute to taxonomic revisions, conservation strategies, and evolutionary theory.
