Ramie Targoff is the Jehuda Reinharz Professor of the Humanities and Professor of English at Brandeis University. She also serves as Co-Chair of the Interdepartmental Program in Italian Studies and is affiliated with the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Program. Her research focuses on Renaissance literature, lyric poetry, religion and literature, and women’s writing, with notable expertise in Shakespeare and Italian literature. Targoff earned her B.A. from Yale University and her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
Her recent publications include Shakespeare's Sisters: How Women Wrote the Renaissance (2024), a groundbreaking work examining women writers in early modern England, and Renaissance Woman: The Life of Vittoria Colonna (2018), a biography of the pioneering Italian poet. Her work frequently bridges literary analysis with interdisciplinary themes like religious practice, gender, and cultural history.
Awardees include a Guggenheim Fellowship (2012-13), a Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin Fellowship (2003-04), and a NOMIS Foundation grant for Petrarch in Global Translation (2024–present). She has also been honored with teaching grants and received the John Donne Society's Distinguished Publication Award (2019).
Targoff teaches courses on Shakespeare, Renaissance literature, and women’s writing. She emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, as seen in her collaboration on a course linking poetry and music in Renaissance England with Sarah Mead. Her scholarship and teaching reflect a commitment to uncovering marginalized voices in literary history.
