Abigail Brundin is Professor of Italian at the University of Cambridge, affiliated with the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics and St Catharine’s College. She is currently on secondment as Director of the British School at Rome. Her research focuses on Italian Renaissance and early modern literature and culture, with particular emphasis on women writers, devotional literature, and the history of the book.
Her research interests include:
- Italian Renaissance literature and women writers (e.g., Vittoria Colonna)
- Religious reform, devotional practices, and convent poetry
- History of the book, material texts, and scribal culture
- Cultural exchange through the Grand Tour and library collections
Her publications predominantly explore themes of domestic piety, gender identity in literature, and the interplay between religious reform and artistic expression. Recent works analyze devotional artifacts, biblical readership in households, and transnational book circulation, reflecting interdisciplinary methodologies bridging literature, history, and art.
She has received notable awards for her co-authored monograph The Sacred Home in Renaissance Italy, including the Bainton Prize for History/Theology and Honorable Mention from the Society for Renaissance Studies.
Professor Brundin supervises doctoral students in renaissance studies and has led major grants, notably as Principal Investigator for the ERC Synergy Grant (£2.4m) project Domestic Devotions. She collaborates with heritage institutions like the National Trust and English Heritage, curating exhibitions on Italian books in historic English libraries.
