Sarah Rolfe Prodan is an Assistant Professor of French and Italian at Stanford University, specializing in Italian literature and cultural history of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Her expertise spans Renaissance studies, medieval literature, religious history, and art history with a focus on Michelangelo scholarship.
Educational background:
- Ph.D., University of Toronto (2011)
- M.A., University of Toronto (2006)
Dr. Prodan's research examines intersections of spirituality, poetry, and art in early modern Italy. Her monograph Michelangelo's Christian Mysticism analyzes the artist's work through medieval Augustinianism and the Italian Reformation, while her current project Poetics of Piety explores devotional verse by male and female poets across pre- and post-Tridentine periods. She also co-edited a volume on premodern European friendship networks and is writing the historical novel Imminence about Florentine political turmoil during the 1494 French invasion.
Her 2014 publications demonstrate interdisciplinary breadth across Renaissance cultural studies, religious expression, and transnational identities, connecting literary analysis with historical context and sociological frameworks.
Scientific awards:
- Jeanne and Aldo Scaglione Publication Award for a Manuscript in Italian Literary Studies (Modern Language Association, 2013)
Prior to Stanford, Dr. Prodan held postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard University's History Department and the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies at the University of Toronto, where she designed courses in Renaissance cultural history and lectured on Italian language and literature. She maintains an active scholarly profile despite being on leave for the 2024-2025 academic year.
