Ram Seshadri is the Fred and Linda R. Wudl Distinguished Professor of Materials Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). He serves as the Associate Dean for Research and Director of the Materials Research Laboratory (MRL), an NSF MRSEC center. His academic journey includes a PhD in Solid State Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), followed by MS and B.Sc. degrees from IISc and St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, respectively.
His research focuses on functional inorganic materials, emphasizing structure-composition-property relationships. Key areas include phosphors, magnetics, thermoelectrics, ferroics, photovoltaics, and battery materials. He pioneered solvothermal synthesis methods for nanomaterials, explored lone-pair effects in polar materials, and developed porous inorganic materials via template-free routes.
- Awards: NSF Early Career Award, AAAS Fellowship, APS Fellowship, and Royal Society of Chemistry Fellowships.
- Editorial Roles: Associate Editor of Chemistry of Materials and Member of the Editorial Committee for Annual Reviews of Materials Research.
Recent articles highlight advancements in perovskite materials, lithium-ion battery anodes, and energy storage systems. His work bridges physics, chemistry, and materials science, with industrial collaborations through NSF and DOE funding. Over 30 graduate students and postdocs have been mentored in his lab, now advancing in academia and industry.
