Michael Chabinyc is a Professor in the Materials Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), part of the College of Engineering. His research focuses on functional thin films, organic/inorganic semiconductors, and energy materials. He holds prestigious fellowships from the Materials Research Society, American Physical Society, Royal Society of Chemistry, and National Academy of Inventors. Chabinyc earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Stanford University and B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Dayton.
His research group explores organic and inorganic semiconductors for electronics and energy applications, using advanced characterization techniques like X-ray scattering and electrical measurements. Key areas include thin-film transistors, photovoltaics, and energy storage materials. The group collaborates with industry and academic partners, supported by grants from NSF, DOE, and others.
Chabinyc advises numerous Ph.D. and M.S. students, many of whom have pursued roles in academia and industry. His lab, located in Elings Hall, focuses on innovative materials design and scalable fabrication methods. Recent work highlights include advancements in perovskite solar cells, thermoelectric materials, and self-healing polymers.
