Ralph Ossa is the UBS Foundation Professor of Economics at the University of Zurich’s Department of Economics, housed within the Faculty of Economics. He previously served as Chief Economist of the World Trade Organization (WTO) from January 2023 to June 2025 and chaired the Department of Economics at UZH between 2019 and 2022. He holds a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics.
His research focuses on international trade, economic geography, and development, with notable contributions to understanding trade wars, WTO negotiations, and the economic impacts of trade policies. He has received an ERC Consolidator Grant for his work on 'Deep Integration Agreements' and has contributed to prestigious journals like the Journal of Political Economy and American Economic Review.
Ossa teaches advanced courses such as 'PhD Course: International Trade' and co-edited the Journal of International Economics. His work bridges theoretical models with empirical analysis, addressing policy-relevant questions like the gains from trade liberalization and the effects of subsidy competition in the U.S.
