Henok Asmelash is an Assistant Professor in Law at the University of Birmingham’s Birmingham Law School. Previously, he served as a Global Postdoctoral Fellow at New York University (NYU) and a Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg. He holds a PhD in International Law and Economics from Bocconi University (Milan), alongside LLM degrees from the University of Barcelona (International Economic Law and Policy) and Addis Ababa University (Business Law). His academic leadership includes module leadership roles in International and European Economic Law, International Trade Law and Policy (LLM), and Preferential Trade Agreements and Regional Blocks (LLM).
His research focuses on legal and policy intersections between trade, energy, and the environment, with emphasis on energy subsidy governance and regional economic integration in Africa. Key contributions include widely cited work on fossil fuel subsidies, featured in IPCC reports. He has advised organizations like the World Institute on Development Economics Research (WIDER) and the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) on fossil fuel subsidy reforms. He actively supervises PhD students in international trade law, investment law, African integration, and global energy transition governance.
Publications span leading journals such as the Journal of International Economic Law, European Journal of International Law, and World Trade Review, with a focus on WTO jurisprudence, energy transition, and climate litigation. His work bridges theoretical legal frameworks with practical policy solutions to global challenges.
