Alessandro Monti is an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Climate Change Law and Governance, Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen, specializing in the intersection of climate policy and international legal frameworks. His work addresses critical gaps in global climate governance through rigorous analysis of trade, investment, and energy law.
Monti's research centers on Climate Change Law, Renewable Energy Law, and International Investment Law, with a focus on carbon leakage prevention, border carbon adjustments, and renewable energy subsidies under WTO rules. He actively investigates how international investment arbitration can reconcile fossil fuel asset protection with green transition imperatives, particularly through his EnAct project funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark.
His 2024 publications reveal a pronounced trend toward actionable legal mechanisms for decarbonization, spanning offshore wind policy in the Mediterranean, Energy Charter Treaty implications after Denmark's withdrawal, and ITLOS's emerging role in maritime climate governance. These works consistently bridge technical legal analysis with pragmatic policy solutions across Energy Law and EU Law domains.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Herbert Tumpel Preis (2020)
- Marietta Blau Stipendium (2020)
Monti supervises bachelor's and master's theses on climate-trade-investment intersections and renewable energy promotion, while leading the "Greenhouse for Tax Sustainability" research stream. His EnAct project explores climate considerations in investment arbitration, and he maintains active collaborations with institutions like NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
As co-founder of the podcast "The Climate Show," he drives public engagement on evolving topics like Arctic shipping governance and forest carbon sequestration mechanisms, complementing his academic work with accessible science communication.
