Robert W. Staiger is the Roth Family Distinguished Professor in the Arts and Sciences and Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College, and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). His work focuses on international trade policy, particularly the GATT/WTO system. He has held positions at Stanford University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and served as Co-Editor of the Journal of International Economics (2010–2017).
Education: A.B. in Economics from Williams College (1980), Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Michigan (1985).
Research Interests:
- International trade policy rules and institutions
- Geopolitical influences on global trade
- Climate policy and international agreements
- WTO's role in contemporary trade governance
Notable Works: Authored/co-authored books including The Economics of the World Trading System (2002) and A World Trading System for the Twenty-First Century (2022). His research explores WTO reforms, trade wars, and digital trade implications.
Awards and Fellowships: Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow (1990–92), Fellow of the Econometric Society (2008–present), and National Fellow at the Hoover Institution (1988–89).
Roles: Served as a Reporter for the American Law Institute’s Principles of Trade Law (2002–2012), and on the WTO’s Young Economists Award panel since 2009. Delivered major lectures including the Ohlin Lectures (2016), Frank D. Graham Memorial Lecture (2018), and McGee Public Policy Lecture (2025).
