Raj Bhala is the Brenneisen Distinguished Professor at the University of Kansas School of Law, specializing in International Trade Law, Islamic Law, and Law and Literature. He joined KU in 2003 and holds the highest university-level professorship in Kansas. Bhala has received prestigious awards, including the Woodyard International Educator Award (2011), Moreau Award (2010), and Kemper Award for Teaching Excellence (2008).
His research spans international trade law theory and practice, Islamic legal studies, and interdisciplinary approaches to law and literature. His seminal works include Modern GATT Law, International Trade Law, and Understanding Islamic Law (Shari'a). Bhala has authored over 100 articles and co-authored works on trade policy, WTO adjudication, and Islamic legal traditions.
Practically, he advises Dentons U.S. LLP on trade law and Islamic law matters. His career includes roles at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and visiting professorships at Duke, Michigan, and Auckland universities. Bhala also lectures globally and serves on editorial boards for major legal journals.
Notable contributions include pioneering courses in International Law and Literature, co-authoring works with students, and advocating for diversity in academia. His service extends to the Council on Foreign Relations, Royal Society for Asian Affairs, and leadership roles in bar associations.
