Petros C. Mavroidis is the Edwin B. Parker Professor of Foreign & Comparative Law at Columbia Law School since 2003, holding a full-time faculty position. He also serves as a legal adviser to the World Trade Organization (WTO) since 1996 and has been a member of its Legal Affairs Division (1992–1995). His expertise spans WTO law, international trade regulation, and global governance. Mavroidis is affiliated with the American Law Institute, Bruegel as a non-resident fellow, and the Swiss Institute of Comparative Law.
Education includes a Dr. Iuris from the University of Heidelberg (1992), an LL.M. from UC Berkeley (1986), and a Ptihion (LL.B.) from the University of Thessaloniki (1982). He has authored over 10 books, including The Regulation of International Trade (2017) and The WTO Dispute Settlement System (2022), which address WTO agreements, dispute resolution, and legal interpretation. His work has earned the 2017 Certificate of Merit in International Law from the American Society of International Law.
Research focuses on WTO law, international trade governance, and the intersection of law and economics. He has pioneered studies on dispute settlement mechanisms, national security exceptions, and multilateral trade dynamics. Mavroidis actively contributes to academic journals, policy discussions, and international organizations, advocating for WTO reform and sustainable global trade practices.
Teaching includes courses on WTO law and international trade regulation at Columbia. He leads initiatives at the Center on Global Governance and advises legal journals such as the Columbia Journal of Transnational Law. His interdisciplinary approach bridges legal theory, economic analysis, and policy advocacy, shaping contemporary debates on global trade frameworks.
