Mervyn Martin

Mervyn Martin is a Senior Lecturer in Law at Teesside University, within the Department of Law, Policing and Investigation in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Law. He holds a LLD from Vrije Universiteit Brussel, an LLM with Distinction from Hull University (Chevening Scholar), and an LLB (Hons) from the University of London. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and serves as Programme Leader and Dissertation Coordinator for multiple LL.M programs, including International Law, Criminal Law, and Medical Law.

His research centers on international economic law, particularly the World Trade Organization, trade dispute settlement, trade and development, and the impact of globalization on developing nations. He actively supervises PhD students and welcomes research proposals in areas such as WTO accession, foreign direct investment regulation, and the expansion of multilateral trade rules.

Dr. Martin's recent publications explore pressing global issues including Brexit, deglobalization, and the interplay between trade and human rights—particularly child labor. His work demonstrates a consistent focus on the rule-based international trading system, power dynamics within WTO mechanisms, and the developmental challenges faced by emerging economies in global trade governance.

He serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals, including the Journal of International Trade Law and Policy, International Journal of Arts and Humanities, and Asian Journal of Social Sciences Studies, and is a reviewer for leading law journals such as the Leiden Journal of International Law. He has delivered guest lectures internationally on WTO governance, dispute settlement, and globalization.

Dr. Martin has extensive professional experience beyond academia, having served as a Diplomatic Officer for the Malaysian government, Head of Corporate Affairs for CPA Australia, and Manager at KPMG Malaysia. He also advises consumer NGOs on international trade and development issues. He is currently a Research Fellow at the Faculty of Law and Criminology, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and an external supervisor for a doctoral candidate there.
