Dr. Rair Macêdo is a Reader in Electrodynamics at the University of Glasgow's James Watt School of Engineering, Department of Electronic & Nanoscale Engineering. He earned his BSc and PhD in Physics from the University of Glasgow, specializing in electromagnetic properties of magnetic structures and hyperbolic media. His research bridges theoretical and experimental physics with applications in quantum technologies.
Research Focus: Macêdo leads investigations in cavity magnon-polaritons, metamaterials, and spin systems. His group explores:
- Hybrid quantum systems coupling magnons and photons
- Anisotropy-induced hyperbolic behavior in natural crystals
- Nonreciprocal optical phenomena including negative refraction
- Ordering processes in artificial spin ice and liquid crystals
Publication analysis reveals three primary trends: 1) Magnon-polariton manipulation for quantum information (45% of recent papers), 2) Hyperbolic material engineering for terahertz applications (30%), and 3) Topological phenomena in frustrated magnetic systems (25%). His articles consistently appear in high-impact journals including Physical Review, ACS Photonics, and Nature Communications.
Awards:
- Leverhulme Trust Early Research Fellowship (2018-2021)
Research Leadership: Macêdo directs multiple projects including:
- Principal Investigator for EPSRC New Horizons project 'Opto-Spintronic interfaces for quantum networks' (£250k, 2023-2025)
- Co-Investigator on £3M EPSRC project 'Empowering Practical Interfacing of Quantum Computing'
- Leverhulme Trust grant for 'Advanced magnetic media for THz devices' (£189k)
