Dr. Radhika Kandaswamy is a Lecturer in Psychiatric Genetics and Neuroscience (Education) at King's College London's Social, Genetic & Developmental Psychiatry (SGDP) Centre, within the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN). She holds an affiliation with the East London Genes & Health Brain Consortium and contributes to the Twins Early Development Study (TEDS). Her roles include teaching molecular biology and epigenetics to Master’s students at the SGDP Centre and IoPPN.
Dr. Kandaswamy completed her PhD at University College London (UCL), focusing on molecular genetics of bipolar disorder under Prof. Hugh Gurling. She later worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Cancer Research on leukemia genetics with Prof. Richard Houlston. Her research expertise spans epigenetics, psychiatric genetics, and gene-environment interactions, particularly in mental health disorders like psychosis and alcohol use. She has explored DNA methylation patterns related to adolescent victimization and childhood adversity, and her work on polygenic scores for alcohol use has advanced understanding of behavioral genetics.
Her publications emphasize interdisciplinary approaches, combining genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors to study mental health outcomes. She has engaged in public outreach to raise awareness of genetics in schools and MQ-funded initiatives. Dr. Kandaswamy’s current projects at SGDP include analyzing the E-Risk study data on psychosocial stress and DNA methylome in twins, and exploring alcohol use phenotypes using genome-wide data.
