Rachid Deriche is an exceptional Research Director at Inria Sophia Antipolis - Méditerranée, where he serves as head of the Athena project team. With a career spanning over three decades at Inria since joining the Sophia Antipolis site in 1988, he has established himself as a leading researcher at the intersection of mathematics, computer science, and neuroimaging. His work bridges theoretical foundations with practical applications in brain imaging and analysis.
Deriche's research interests focus on mathematical image analysis, computer vision, and computational neuroimaging. He specializes in developing advanced techniques for processing and analyzing complex neuroimaging data from MRI, EEG, and MEG modalities. His methodological approach integrates variational methods, mathematical analysis of signals, and statistical learning techniques to tackle challenges in brain connectivity mapping. His work addresses the heterogeneity, multi-scale nature, and complexity of brain data, working with structures like the cortex as mathematical varieties.
Deriche received the prestigious ERC Advanced Grant in 2015 for his CoBCoM (Computational Brain Connectivity Mapping) project, which aims to construct a dynamic network of structural and functional connectivities of the human brain. His research has significant societal impact, particularly in understanding and diagnosing neurodegenerative diseases affecting over a third of Europeans.
