Rachel Matthews is an Associate Professor and Associate Head of Research at the School of Media and Performing Arts, Coventry University. She holds a PhD in Journalism Studies from Cardiff University and has over 15 years' experience in local newspaper journalism. Her research focuses on historical analysis of the provincial press to inform contemporary media challenges, with particular emphasis on sustainability, community value, and ethical practices.
Qualifications include a PhD from Cardiff University (2014), a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (2007), and a National Certificate in Newspaper Journalism (1991). She is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Research interests span media history, local journalism's social role, and industry innovation. She co-edited Reappraising Local and Community News in the UK (2021) and contributed to the Routledge Companion to Local Media and Journalism. Recent publications analyze WWII reporting, legacy media sustainability, and community journalism practices.
Professional roles include Ethics Committee membership with Impress (UK press regulator) and chairing MeCCSA's Local and Community Media Network. Teaching focuses on media law, ethics, and research methodologies. She received a Coventry University Teaching Award for student-led election coverage projects.
