Rachel L Gunn is an Associate Professor holding dual appointments in the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences (Primary) and Psychiatry and Human Behavior (Secondary) at Brown University. She holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Indiana University-Bloomington (2017) and completed clinical training at Brown's Alpert Medical School. Her research focuses on understanding the etiology of alcohol and cannabis use through mixed-method approaches, including laboratory experiments and ambulatory assessments. Current projects investigate simultaneous alcohol/cannabis use impacts, cannabis effects on alcohol treatment outcomes, and perinatal cannabis use mental health consequences.
Dr. Gunn's NIH-funded research includes a K08 grant (2019-2024) examining alcohol/cannabis co-use consequences, an R01 (2023-2028) studying cannabis effects on alcohol craving, and a COBRE Pilot Award (2023-2024) exploring perinatal cannabis and postpartum mental health. She collaborates with experts like Jane Metrik, Nancy Barnett, and Lauren Micalizzi on topics spanning substance use patterns, impulsivity, and executive function.
Her work integrates behavioral pharmacology, ecological momentary assessment, and longitudinal designs to address real-world substance use dynamics. Notable contributions include demonstrating cannabis's moderating effect on alcohol consumption in clinical settings and clarifying co-use consequences in college populations.
