Rachel Fenton is an Associate Professor in the Law School at the University of Exeter, where she has been since 2017. Previously, she held roles as Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor at the University of the West of England (UWE), where she won the Vice-Chancellor's award for Outstanding Researcher of the Year with Impact in 2016. Her research focuses on gender and the law, violence against women, assisted reproduction, and criminology. She is a co-convenor of the Universities Against Gender-Based Violence (UAGBV) Network and sits on the Editorial Advisory Board for the Journal of Gender-Based Violence.
Education: Rachel earned a First Class Honours LLB in Law and Italian from Cardiff University, winning the Sir Samuel Evans and Edwards Geldard prizes. She completed her PhD at Cardiff University and served as a Guest Professor for Common Law at the University of Trier.
Research highlights include developing The Intervention Initiative, a bystander intervention program for preventing sexual and domestic violence in universities. This program received Public Health England funding and influenced UK government policy, being featured in the Violence Against Women Action Plan. Her work has been disseminated through over 30 invited talks, media appearances (e.g., BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour), and publications in The Guardian and Times Higher Education. Rachel also contributed to evaluations of police specialist rape investigation units funded by the British Academy and ESRC.
Funding and grants include a Bristol City Council grant for expanding The Intervention Initiative to communities and ESRC Festival of Social Science funding for educational projects with secondary schools. Her interdisciplinary collaborations span universities, government bodies, and NGOs, including Universities UK, HEFCE, and Drinkaware.
Labs/Teams: Core contributor to the Intervention Initiative team at UWE and part of Prof Phi Rumney's UWE-led evaluation of police units.
