Dr. Rachel Davies is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Teaching in the School of Medicine at the University of St Andrews. She holds academic leadership roles including overseeing the Gateway to Medicine programme and serving as a Personal Tutor. Her research spans molecular cancer biology and medical education innovation. She earned a BA in Biochemistry from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, followed by a PhD on HPV/cervical cancer at London. Postdoctoral work included studies on Wilms' tumor (Edinburgh) and breast cancer (Cambridge). She previously directed the MSc in Medical Genetics at Newcastle University's Institute of Human Genetics.
Her scientific research focuses on tumor suppressor gene dysfunction in inherited cancers, viral interference mechanisms (e.g., HPV), and DNA repair pathways. Educational research examines assessment strategies' impact on student learning outcomes, particularly formative vs. summative assessments and feedback efficacy. External roles include Education Associate at the General Medical Council and External Examiner at the University of Leicester.
Publications highlight contributions to understanding viral oncogenesis, BRCA2's role in DNA repair, and WT1 protein interactions. Teaching priorities include strengthening molecular medicine education for medical students, emphasizing genetics and clinical application. Ongoing projects explore competency-based exams and assessment-driven improvements in clinical skill mastery.
