Dr. Rachel Chin is a Lecturer in War Studies within the History Department at the University of Glasgow, and serves as a Researcher Development Specialist focusing on Writing and Communication for Research Services. Her work bridges academic research and researcher support, coordinating workshops and writing retreats for postgraduate researchers.
Her research focuses on 20th-century Franco-British relations through the lens of conflict and empire. Key publications include her 2022 book War of Words: Britain, France and Discourses of Empire during the Second World War (Cambridge UP), analyzing rhetoric as strategic policy in imperial disputes. Current projects investigate imperial migration (e.g., Chinese communities in British Jamaica) and postwar citizenship reimaginings.
Her research interests span imperial history, WWII dynamics, migration studies, and the interplay of history with national identity. She also explores history and memory, particularly how past events shape contemporary diplomatic narratives.
In teaching, Dr. Chin instructs HIST4273 (The Second World War in History and Legacy) and HIST5069 (Theory and Reality in Western Warfare). Her grant-funded work includes an RSE project on Chinese-Jamaican communities and AHRC support for Franco-British relations since 1815.
