Dr Frances Houghton is an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of History at the University of Manchester. She specializes in cultural-military history, focusing on Britain's armed forces during the Second World War. Her research explores themes of gender, race, memory, and medical humanities, with a particular emphasis on naval medical care and masculine culture. She previously held roles as a Lecturer in Modern British History (2016–2019) and a Simon Research Fellowship (2019–2022), supporting her project on medical care and masculinity in the Royal Navy during WWII.
Education: MA (History, University of Edinburgh 2005–2009); MSc (Modern British History, University of Edinburgh 2009–2010); PhD (History, University of Edinburgh 2010–2015). Funded by a Principal's Career Development Scholarship, her doctoral work examined British veterans' military memoirs of WWII, culminating in her award-winning monograph The Veterans' Tale (Cambridge University Press, 2019).
Her research interests include written auto/biographical narratives, oral history, and the intersection of medical care with naval experiences. She contributes to public engagement through roles like Historical Consultant for BBC's Antiques Roadshow: VE Day Special and community-focused initiatives with the Imperial War Museum.
Key awards include the Templer First Book Prize (2019) and the University of Manchester's Excellence Award (2020). She is affiliated with the Centre for the Cultural History of War and collaborates on projects like 'War and Conflict: Connecting Communities During the Pandemic' (2020–2021).
