R. Scott Coppersmith is a Senior Research Engineer affiliated with the Civil Engineering and Geological Sciences Department at the University of Notre Dame, part of the Environmental Fluid Mechanics (EFM) Laboratory. He holds a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Michigan Technological University (1987). Prior to joining academia, he worked in automotive and industrial sectors, including roles at Chrysler, Allied Signal, and Robert Bosch LLC, focusing on embedded systems, mechanical/electrical prototyping, and quality assurance processes.
His research interests emphasize laboratory instrumentation design, signal conditioning, and data acquisition systems. He has contributed to multidisciplinary projects such as MATERHORN, MISO-BOB, and field experiments in the Chilean Magellan Strait. Notably, he holds a design patent for an audio mixer component (DES. 355,656).
At Notre Dame, he supports the EFM Laboratory’s infrastructure and collaborates with faculty and researchers on experimental setups. His career spans automotive product lifecycle management, quality certification (QS9000/ISO9001), and problem-solving methodologies like Six Sigma.
