R. Darren Gobert is a Professor of Theater Studies and English at Duke University, specializing in comparative modern and contemporary Western drama, dramatic and performance theory, and the philosophy of theatre. His research explores intersections of cognition, emotion, and theatrical practice across historical and contemporary contexts.
Recent articles highlight his work on gender and casting in Caryl Churchill's Love and Information, Cartesian subjectivity in neoclassical performance, and cognitive catharsis in Brechtian and Freudian frameworks. His scholarship spans adaptations, translations, and the evolution of dramatic theory.
Scientific awards include the Ann Saddlemyer Award (2014), Barnard Hewitt Award (2014), President's University Wide Teaching Award (2016), and John C. Polyani Prize (2007). He has served on committees for the American Society for Theatre Research and Modern Language Association.
