R. Darren Gobert is a Professor of Theater Studies and English at Duke University, holding dual appointments in Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. He serves as Chair of the Department of Theater Studies since 2021. With a Ph.D. from Columbia University (2003), his research focuses on comparative modern drama, performance theory, and Cartesian theater philosophy. His notable works include The Theatre of Caryl Churchill and The Mind-Body Stage, which earned prestigious awards like the Ann Saddlemyer Prize and Barnard Hewitt Award.
His research explores gender in performance, non-binary identity, and the intersections of philosophy and theater. Recent publications analyze Caryl Churchill’s plays and globalizing performance trends. Gobert has secured grants from the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation and led initiatives supporting arts in Trinity College.
He teaches courses like Reading Theater and oversees senior distinction projects. Awards include Duke’s distinguished faculty rank (2019) and York University’s President’s Teaching Award (2016). His service includes editorial roles at Modern Drama and leadership in professional theater societies.
