R. Danielle Egan serves as the Dean of the Faculty and Chief Academic Officer at Connecticut College, holding the distinguished position of Fuller-Maathai Professor of Gender, Sexuality and Intersectionality Studies. As the highest-ranking academic officer after the president, she provides leadership for the College's academic programs and faculty. She joined Connecticut College in 2017.
Egan's educational background includes:
- Ph.D. from Boston College
- M.A. and PsyaD from Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis
- B.A. from Goucher College
Professor Egan's research examines the social construction of sexual "problems" and how cultural institutions create and defend norms of social and sexual acceptability. Her work spans sexuality studies, gender and feminist theory, queer theory, history of ideas, childhood and youth studies, and psychoanalysis. She investigates how people negotiate, resist, and sometimes participate in sexual hegemony.
Egan's publications reveal a consistent focus on challenging dominant narratives about sexuality. Her work traces the historical development of sexual norms while questioning contemporary assumptions about children's sexuality, gender performance, and the sex industry. Across her publications, she demonstrates how moral panics about sexualization often serve to reinforce existing power structures rather than address genuine concerns.
Her scholarship has received significant recognition, with Becoming Sexual named Book of the Week by the Times Higher Educational Supplement in 2013. Her research has been featured in The Guardian, The Australian, BBC Radio 4, and NPR's Good Parenting Radio. Her collaborative work with Gail Hawkes informed policy discussions with the UK Home Office and Scottish Government.
At Connecticut College, Professor Egan teaches GWS 103 (Sex/Culture/Power: an Introduction to Gender and Women's Studies), GWS 306 (Advanced Readings in Feminist Theory), and new electives in sexuality studies. She also maintains a clinical practice as a psychoanalyst, integrating her theoretical work with practical application.
