Marie Egan, MD is Professor of Pediatrics (Respiratory) and of Cellular and Molecular Physiology at Yale University School of Medicine. She serves as Director of the Cystic Fibrosis Center and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics, leading the Pediatric Pulmonology, Allergy, Immunology & Sleep Medicine section with dual appointments across departments.
Dr. Egan's educational background includes:
- MD from Mount Sinai School of Medicine (1986)
- Internship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital (1987)
- Residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital (1989)
- Fellowship in Pediatric Respiratory Sciences at Johns Hopkins Hospital (1992)
Her research focuses on ion transport across airway epithelia in cystic fibrosis, examining how CFTR dysfunction leads to impaired mucociliary clearance and subsequent lung damage. The Egan lab employs electrophysiologic techniques to study CFTR's role in modulating ion channels and its function in primary immune cells. Recent work has expanded into innovative therapeutic approaches including gene editing and nanoparticle delivery systems for CFTR correction.
Analysis of Dr. Egan's recent publications reveals a clear research trajectory toward understanding immune dysregulation in CF lung disease while developing advanced therapeutic strategies. Her work increasingly integrates stem cell approaches, gene editing technologies, and nanoparticle delivery systems to address the fundamental CFTR defect, demonstrating a strong commitment to translating basic science discoveries into clinical applications.
Dr. Egan's scientific achievements have been recognized through:
- Hartwell Individual Biomedical Research Award (2011)
- Society of Distinguished Teachers (2002)
- Leah Lowenstein Award for Faculty Teaching (2002)
- Society of Pediatric Research leadership role
As Vice Chair for Research and CF Center Director, Dr. Egan oversees numerous research initiatives and mentors junior faculty. She serves on the Charles Hood Child Health Research Committee (2010-present) and as an NIH study section reviewer (2008-present), contributing significantly to research funding decisions in pediatric medicine.
Dr. Egan leads the Yale Cystic Fibrosis Center research program and collaborates extensively with the CPIRT (Center for Pulmonary Injury, Inflammation, Repair and Therapeutics). Her laboratory is deeply integrated with Yale's Graduate Program in Cellular and Molecular Physiology and the Yale Combined Program in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences, fostering interdisciplinary research approaches to cystic fibrosis.
