Terry Machen is a Professor of the Graduate School in the Division of Cell Biology, Development and Physiology at the University of California, Berkeley's College of Letters & Science. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of ion and fluid transport in epithelial tissues, particularly in the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. Recent work emphasizes the role of CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) in preventing infections, especially in airway epithelia interactions with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Since 2020, his primary role has shifted to teaching undergraduate courses such as Bio1AL and MCB136.
Research interests include CFTR-mediated innate immunity, bacterial quorum-sensing molecules like homoserine lactone, and their effects on epithelial cells. Key studies involve cystic fibrosis swine models to analyze ion transport defects and therapeutic responses to hypertonic saline. His work bridges basic physiology with clinical implications for cystic fibrosis pathogenesis.
Publications highlight CFTR's role in airway defense, apoptosis induction by bacterial signaling molecules, and pH regulation in submucosal glands. Collaborations span microbiology, cell biology, and pharmacology, with findings published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of Biological Chemistry, and Nature Communications.
Teaching and mentorship are emphasized through undergraduate instruction. Ongoing efforts focus on translating physiological insights into therapeutic strategies for respiratory diseases.
