Quentin Skinner is an Emeritus Professor of Humanities at Queen Mary, University of London, and previously held the Barber Beaumont Professorship there from 2008. He served as Regius Professor of Modern History at the University of Cambridge (1996–2008) and Professor of Political Science (1979–1996). His academic journey includes roles at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and early career positions at Cambridge. Skinner specializes in the history of political thought, focusing on Renaissance rhetorical culture, Thomas Hobbes' philosophy, and the conceptualization of political liberty.
His research explores the interpretation of historical texts and the evolution of political ideas. Notable works include The Foundations of Modern Political Thought (1978) and Visions of Politics (2002). Skinner’s contributions have been recognized through prestigious awards like the Balzan Prize (2006) and honorary doctorates.
