معرفی
Quamarul Hassan is a Professor in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry. He holds multiple academic appointments across several departments and centers, including Molecular & Cellular Pathology, Cell, Developmental and Integrative Biology, Otolaryngology, Center for Clinical and Translational Science, and the Global Center for Craniofacial, Oral and Dental Disorders. His primary research focuses on the epigenetic regulation of bone formation and osteogenesis, with particular emphasis on chromatin remodeling, microRNA function, and transcription factor networks that govern skeletal development.
Dr. Hassan's educational background includes a Ph.D. in Science & Mathematics (Molecular Biology) from Jadavpur University, a Master's in Biochemistry from Indian Veterinary Research Institute, and a Bachelor's in Veterinary Sciences from Bidhan Chandra Agricultural University. His research expertise spans bone biology, epigenetics, microRNA regulation, craniofacial disorders, and tissue engineering.
His work has significantly advanced our understanding of how chromatin remodeling complexes, particularly the BAF complex, regulate osteoblast and odontoblast differentiation through interactions with key transcription factors like RUNX2. He has made important contributions to understanding how microRNA clusters control bone formation and homeostasis through epigenetic mechanisms. His research on titanium nanotopography has implications for improving dental and orthopedic implant integration.
Dr. Hassan has received multiple research grants from the National Institutes of Health, including funding from the National Institute of Arthritis & Musculoskeletal & Skin Diseases, National Institute on Aging, and National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, supporting his investigations into epigenetic regulation of bone formation, osteoblast differentiation, and related pathologies.
As an educator, Dr. Hassan has served on numerous thesis and dissertation committees, mentored graduate students, and taught courses including Research Skills Enhancement and Introduction to Physiology. He has been actively involved in graduate education at UAB, guiding students through their research projects and academic development.
His laboratory research focuses on the molecular mechanisms controlling skeletal development and bone homeostasis, with particular emphasis on epigenetic regulation through chromatin remodeling and non-coding RNA networks. Current projects investigate how BAF45A-mediated chromatin remodeling promotes transcriptional activation for osteogenesis and odontogenesis, and how microRNA clusters regulate bone formation through interactions with key transcription factors.
