Dr. Qingyu Chen is a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the Department of Biomedical Informatics & Data Science, School of Medicine, Yale University, starting in 2024. He also holds a secondary appointment as Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology. Prior to joining Yale, he completed postdoctoral training at the National Center for Biotechnology Information, National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Chen earned his PhD in Computer Science (Biomedical Informatics) from the University of Melbourne and holds a BS (Hon) in Computer Science from The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, where he graduated with First-class honors ranking #1 in his degree.
Dr. Chen's research focuses on data science and artificial intelligence in biomedicine and healthcare, with three primary areas of interest:
- Biomedical Natural Language Processing and Large Language Models
- Medical Image and Multimodal Analysis in Healthcare
- Downstream Accountability and Trustworthy AI for Medical Applications
His recent publications demonstrate significant trends toward integrating multimodal data sources, improving the factual accuracy of large language models in medical contexts, and developing practical applications for clinical decision support. Dr. Chen has published over 40 first/last-author papers out of a total of 80+ publications in high-impact venues including Nature, Nature Medicine, Nature Machine Intelligence, and Nucleic Acids Research.
Dr. Chen has received numerous scientific awards including:
- NIH Fellows Award for Research Excellence (twice)
- AI Talent Scholar (Top 50 in AI across disciplines)
- NLM Honor Award (twice)
- Top-ranked performances in biomedical and clinical NLP challenges (four times)
- NIH Summer Research Mentor Award (four times)
- Excellence in Teaching Awards (twice)
As a dedicated educator and mentor, Dr. Chen has taught over 20 courses and mentored more than 10 trainees. He currently serves as Principal Investigator for two major NIH grants: an R01 grant on improving factuality of LLMs in medicine and a K99/R00 grant on multimodal AI-assisted disease diagnosis. Dr. Chen actively leads the Qingyu Chen Lab, focusing on advancing AI applications in healthcare with particular emphasis on ophthalmology and clinical informatics.
