Professor Qingbo Xu is the Chair of Cardiovascular Science at Queen Mary University of London's William Harvey Research Institute, part of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. He holds a MD from Peking Union Medical College and a PhD, with postdoctoral training at the University of Innsbruck Medical School and the NIH in the USA. His career includes roles at St George’s Hospital and King’s College London before joining Queen Mary in 2020.
His research focuses on translational vascular biology, including stem/progenitor cells in atherosclerosis and vascular tissue engineering. He investigates mechanisms of stem cell differentiation and develops artificial blood vessels using bioreactor technology. Key projects include understanding endothelial repair and exploring therapeutic targets for vascular diseases.
- Research Highlights:
- Stem/progenitor cell roles in vein graft atherosclerosis
- Nuclear signaling pathways in vascular cell differentiation
- Ex vivo engineering of functional blood vessels
Professor Xu has received international recognition through awards like the Austrian Cardinal Prize and Rokitansky Prize. He chairs conferences, serves on editorial boards (e.g., American Heart Association’s ATVB), and co-edited the Handbook of Mouse Models of Cardiovascular Disease.
His work is funded by the British Heart Foundation, Royal Society, and EU grants. Collaborators include Prof. Bin Zhou (Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Prof. Stefan Kiechl (University of Innsbruck). His team includes postdoctoral researchers like Xiaolei Sun.
