Simon P. Hoerstrup

Prof. Dr. Dr. Simon P. Hoerstrup is a Professor at the University of Zurich, leading research at the Institute for Regenerative Medicine and Wyss Zurich (a collaborative initiative between University of Zurich and ETH Zurich). His work drives patient-oriented translational research in regenerative biomedicine through integrated academic-industrial partnerships.

His research focuses on cardiovascular regenerative applications, specializing in tissue-engineered blood vessels and heart valves alongside cell-based myocardial regeneration strategies. Laboratory investigations utilize diverse cell sources including human embryonic stem cells (hES), induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS), endothelial progenitor cells (EPC), mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), fetal stem cells, and fully differentiated human/animal tissue derivatives. This work targets transformative treatments for diabetes and heart disease through cellular therapies and endogenous repair stimulation.

The Institute for Regenerative Medicine houses a Swissmedic-compliant Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) core facility enabling clinical translation of engineered tissues. This infrastructure supports cross-disciplinary collaboration among surgery/medicine, biomedical engineering, molecular biology, and nanotechnology specialists to advance regenerative technologies from bench to bedside under international regulatory standards.
