Qi Song is a Research Fellow in Governing Energy-Mobility Transitions at the SPRU (Science Policy Research Unit) within the University of Sussex Business School, working on the EMPOCI project (2020-2026) funded by the European Research Council. Previously serving as a Research Assistant from November 2020 to June 2024, he transitioned to his current Research Fellow position in July 2024 while completing his PhD in Science and Technology Policy Studies.
His educational background includes an MSc in Science and Technology Policy (with Distinction) from the University of Sussex (2019-2020), where he was awarded the Geoffrey Oldham Scholarship. During his doctoral studies, he conducted research residencies at Tsinghua University's Chinese Institute of Engineering Development Strategies (2022) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (2023), supported by the Eu-SPRI Forum PhD Circulation Award.
Dr. Song's research focuses on the intersection of innovation policy and sustainability transitions, particularly examining how policy mixes accelerate socio-technical changes in electric mobility systems. His work employs interdisciplinary approaches combining innovation studies with policy sciences, utilizing methodologies including "text as data" analysis, network analysis, and comparative case studies across China and Germany. His scholarship addresses critical questions about governing entities, policy feedback mechanisms, and the administrative dynamics that shape effective interventions for low-carbon transitions.
His publication record reveals a clear trajectory toward understanding policy-technology co-evolution in sustainability transitions, with increasing focus on electric mobility systems and the complex governance arrangements required to accelerate transformative change. His work bridges theoretical frameworks of socio-technical transitions with practical policy design considerations, contributing to both academic discourse and policy-relevant knowledge.
- Geoffrey Oldham Scholar (Master's level)
- Eu-SPRI Forum PhD Circulation Award recipient
As a journal reviewer for Policy Studies, R&D Management, Environmental Innovation and Societal Transitions, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, and SPRU Working Paper Series, Dr. Song actively contributes to academic discourse in innovation and sustainability policy fields. His research within the EMPOCI project represents significant European-funded investigation into transformative policy approaches for sustainability transitions, with particular emphasis on cross-national learning between China and Germany in electric mobility development.
Working within the SPRU - Science Policy Research Unit, Dr. Song collaborates with leading scholars including Rogge KS on transformative mission-oriented innovation policies and sustainability governance frameworks. His research combines theoretical insights from transition studies with empirical analysis of policy implementation dynamics, contributing to the development of more effective approaches for governing complex socio-technical transitions toward sustainability.
