Pēteris Tretjakovs

Pēteris Tretjakovs is a Professor and Head of the Department of Human Physiology and Biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine, Rīga Stradiņš University. He also serves as Director of the Biomedicine Master’s Study Programme, where he contributes significantly to curriculum development and academic leadership.

His research focuses on clinically useful biomarkers in obesity-related diseases, particularly early risk factors for type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease. He employs non-invasive techniques such as laser Doppler fluxmetry and intravital videocapillaroscopy, and molecular methods like xMAP to assess vasomotor dysfunction, cytokine expression, and insulin resistance. His work bridges physiology, biochemistry, and clinical medicine, with strong applications in preventive cardiology and metabolic health.

His recent publications reflect a sustained focus on inflammatory markers (e.g., IL-6, TNF-α, PAI-1), adipokines, and vascular function across diverse populations, including pregnant women, athletes, and patients with metabolic syndrome. These studies often explore the interplay between fat distribution, endothelial function, and systemic inflammation.

He also contributes to peer review for international journals.
