Pål Börjesson is a Professor in Environmental and Energy Systems Studies at Lund University, affiliated with the Lund Institute of Technology (LTH). He holds positions in multiple profile areas including BECC (Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate), The Energy Transition, and Nature-based future solutions. His research focuses on sustainability performance of biomass-based energy systems, life cycle assessment (LCA), and policy analysis, with 25 years of experience in multi-disciplinary systems studies.
He leads several high-profile projects such as AgroDrive (fossil-free agricultural energy systems), Mistra BIOPATH (biodiversity and bioeconomy), and Bio+ (bioenergy's role in climate goals). He has supervised 10 research students, including Anton Kvarnbäck. His work contributes to UN SDGs 7 (Affordable Clean Energy), 12 (Responsible Consumption), and 15 (Life on Land).
Recent research trends emphasize biodiversity impact assessment in bioenergy systems, land-use policy implications, and the integration of biomass into energy transition frameworks. His publications span peer-reviewed journals, reports, and edited volumes, often addressing practical applications of LCA methodologies and policy-relevant outcomes.
Notable collaborations include international networks on bioenergy sustainability, forest resource management, and interdisciplinary sustainability science. He actively participates in conferences, workshops, and public debates to bridge academic research with policy and industry practice.
