A/Prof Pirjo Apaja is an Associate Professor and Full Member of the College of Medicine and Public Health at Flinders University, leading the Organelle Proteostasis Diseases Laboratory within the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute. Her research focuses on cellular proteostasis stress responses in brain diseases and cancers, utilizing multidisciplinary approaches to identify therapeutic targets.
Her expertise spans Proteostasis Networks, Protein Quality Control, and Brain Diseases, with significant contributions to understanding membrane organelle/protein targets in disease models. Laboratory methodologies integrate omics, biochemical analyses, and cell biological techniques to investigate post-translational modifications and quality control systems in pathological conditions including Parkinson's disease and breast cancer.
Recent publications (2022-2025) demonstrate a cohesive research trajectory centered on autophagy/endophagy mechanisms in proteostasis, revealing critical intersections between cancer progression, neurodegeneration, and inflammatory pathways through studies of ATG8, UBR1, and arginylation pathways.
As laboratory head, Dr. Apaja directs research on organelle quality control systems, with emphasis on developing targeted compounds to modulate protein folding, recognition, and disposal mechanisms in disease contexts, maintaining active collaborations in oncology and neuroscience research domains.
