Judith Frydman is the Donald Kennedy Chair in the School of Humanities and Sciences and a Professor of Biology at Stanford University. She leads the Frydman Lab, which focuses on understanding protein folding mechanisms in living cells, particularly the roles of molecular chaperones and quality control pathways. Her research integrates biochemistry, structural biology, and cell biology to address how misfolding diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and cancer arise from cellular proteostasis failures.
Her work emphasizes the interplay between cotranslational processes (e.g., ribosome dynamics, codon-translation rates) and chaperone networks, including the chaperonin TRiC/CCT. Key contributions include discovering how non-optimal codons slow translation to enhance SRP recognition, the structural basis of TRiC’s substrate specificity, and mechanisms of spatial protein quality control via Q-bodies.
Recent studies highlight aging-induced ribosome pausing impairing proteostasis and the role of lysosomal repair in neural stem cells. Frydman’s lab employs cutting-edge techniques like cryo-EM, crosslinking-mass spectrometry, and single-molecule imaging.
