Dr. Phillip Michael Sherman is a Professor of Religion and Chair of the Division of Humanities at Maryville College. A native Tennessean, he earned his B.A. in Religion and German from Emory & Henry College, M.Div. from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology, and Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible/Old Testament from Emory University. His research focuses on interfaith textual interpretation and the role of animals in religious thought. Sherman leads the Lilly Endowment-funded Maryville Adventures in Studying Theology (M.A.S.T.), strengthening youth ministry through theological education.

He frequently reviews scholarly works and hosts interviews on biblical studies, including discussions with experts like Dr. Mira Beth Wasserman on Jewish-Gentile-animal dynamics and Dr. Erin Darby on Judean religious artifacts.
Engagement with community includes presentations on Evangelicalism, Islamic theology, and LGBTQ+ issues in United Methodist congregations. His 2013 Brill monograph on Genesis 11 interpretations remains a key text in Jewish exegesis studies.
