Phillip David Griffiths is an Associate Professor in the Department of Horticulture Section at Cornell University’s School of Integrative Plant Science, affiliated with Cornell AgriTech. He specializes in vegetable breeding, focusing on Brassicas, beans, and tomatoes, with a focus on resistance to pests, environmental stresses, and consumer quality traits. His research emphasizes adaptation to the Great Lakes Region and tropical/sub-tropical climates, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa. Techniques include molecular breeding, diagnostics, and controlled environment screening.

His research addresses global challenges like food security through development of heat-tolerant bean varieties and black rot-resistant Brassicas. Recent work includes the ‘Yellow Submarine’ tomato, a unique yellow-fleshed variety. Collaborations span multi-state and international networks, including roles in seed company field days and grower outreach. He teaches PLSCI 2020: Foods of the Future and is based at Cornell AgriTech in Geneva, NY.
