Gennaro Fazio is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Integrative Plant Science, Horticultural Sciences Department at Cornell University, and a Research Geneticist with the USDA-ARS Plant Genetic Resources Unit in Geneva, NY. His work focuses on apple rootstock improvement through genetic research and breeding.
- Ph.D. in Plant Breeding and Genetics, University of Wisconsin-Madison (2001)
- M.S. in Agronomy-Molecular Biology, Brigham Young University (1997)
- B.S. in Molecular Biology and Agronomy, Brigham Young University (1995)
Fazio develops apple rootstocks with enhanced productivity and resistance to diseases like fire blight and replant disease. His research includes marker-assisted breeding protocols, quantitative genetics, and exploration of the National Malus Collection for genetic resources. Key areas include disease resistance, root/tree architecture, and plant nutrition.
Based at Cornell AgriTech in Geneva, NY, he has been recognized for contributions to horticultural science through awards at conferences like the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS). His work impacts global apple cultivation with over 70 million trees planted on Geneva rootstocks.
