Michael Mazourek is an Associate Professor at Cornell University's School of Integrative Plant Science, affiliated with both the Plant Breeding and Genetics Section and the Horticulture Section. His research focuses on improving vegetable crops—particularly cucurbits, peppers, peas, and beans—through flavor enhancement, nutritional value, and resilience in ecologically based production systems. He emphasizes natural environment selection to reduce synthetic inputs and aligns breeding efforts with evolutionary principles.
- Education: Doctorate in Plant Breeding from Cornell University (2008).
Research interests include biochemical genetics for flavor and nutrition, applied quantitative genetics, and plant defense mechanisms. He bridges genetic theory with practical application, leveraging tools like genomics and analytical chemistry to create sustainable crop varieties. His outreach work engages growers and the public to highlight plant breeding's role in addressing agricultural challenges.
Notable awards include recognition in Grist's '50 People to Watch' (2016) and the Saveur 100 (2015) for the Honeynut squash. He teaches PLBRG 2250 - Plant Genetics, preparing students for post-genomic era challenges.
Affiliations: Cornell AgriTech, School of Integrative Plant Science, and the Horticulture Section. Active in collaborative projects with growers and global networks to disseminate germplasm and knowledge.
