Prof. Dr. Philip van der Eijk is the Alexander von Humboldt Professor of Classics and History of Science at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, leading the Institut für Klassische Philologie. Born in 1962, he holds doctorates from Leiden University (1991) and has held posts at Newcastle University, including Research Professor of Greek. His research focuses on ancient medicine, philosophy, and early Christian thought, with notable contributions to Galenic studies and Aristotelianism.
His academic leadership includes directing major projects like 'Synchronizing the Body in Ancient Medicine and Philosophy' and the DFG Research Training Group 'Philosophy, Science and the Sciences'. He chairs Studies in Ancient Medicine (Brill) and the Cambridge Galen Translations series. Awards include the Ausonius Prize (2006) and fellowships at All Souls College, Oxford, and the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton.
Van der Eijk advises numerous PhD students on topics ranging from Galen's methodology to Neoplatonic exegesis. He organizes international conferences, including workshops on Galen's Medical Definitions and Kairos in Ancient Medicine.
