Ricarda Gäbel is a scholar in Classics and Ancient Medicine, affiliated with Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin's Department of Classics within the Faculty of Language, Literature and Humanities. She held a Research Fellow position from 2017–2020, contributing to the SFB 980 project on medical knowledge transfer in Late Antiquity. Her work focuses on ancient medical texts, particularly Aetius of Amida and Galen, exploring how medical knowledge was compiled, transmitted, and critically assessed in late antique encyclopedias.
Education: BA in Classics (2011, Humboldt-Universität), M.Ed. (2013, Humboldt-Universität), PhD (2018, supervised by Prof. van der Eijk). Her doctoral thesis examined Aetius of Amida's medical writings, later expanded into her 2022 monograph. She was funded by the Graduate Program in Ancient Philosophy (2013–2017).
Research interests include ancient medical theory/practice, textual criticism of fragmentary sources, and the history of medical knowledge transmission. Her work bridges classical philology with the history of science, analyzing how late antique compilers engaged with earlier medical traditions.
