Professor Philip Ziegler is a prominent theologian and academic, holding the position of Professor of Christian Dogmatics at the University of Aberdeen’s School of Divinity, History, Philosophy & Art History since 2016. He previously served as Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology at the Atlantic School of Theology (2002–2005) and joined Aberdeen’s Divinity department in 2006. Educated at the Royal Military College of Canada and the University of Toronto (B.A., M.A., STL, MDiv, ThD), he held a postdoctoral fellowship at Princeton University (2000–2002). Ordained in the United Church of Canada (1996), he is an associated elder at St Machar Cathedral and a Trustee of the Church of Scotland’s General Assembly.
His research focuses on Christian dogmatics, including Christology, soteriology, and Pauline apocalypticism, with particular attention to theologians like Kierkegaard, Barth, and Bonhoeffer. He leads collaborations such as the ‘Explorations in Theology and Apocalyptic’ working group and edits journals like Studies in Christian Ethics and Journal of Reformed Theology. He has authored or edited major works, including the upcoming God’s Adversary and Ours (2025) and the Edinburgh Critical History of Twentieth-Century Christian Theology (2022).
Ziegler has held leadership roles at Aberdeen, including Director of the Aberdeen Centre for Protestant Theology and Head of School (2009–2012). His grants include support from the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the John Templeton Foundation. He actively contributes to academic societies like the Society for Biblical Literature and the Karl Barth Society of North America.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on systematic theology, the philosophy of religion, and Reformation studies. He supervises PhD students in systematic theology and advocates for interdisciplinary theological education, emphasizing the relevance of apocalyptic discourse and ethical reflection in contemporary contexts.
