Karl Barth (1886–1968) was a renowned Swiss Reformed theologian and professor of Protestant theology at the University of Basel. He is best known for his monumental work Church Dogmatics and his theological emphasis on God's revelation through Jesus Christ. Barth's theology critiqued the misuse of theology for political ends, most notably opposing National Socialism and co-authoring the Barmen Theological Declaration with the Confessing Church.
After theological studies in Switzerland, Barth began as a pastor but shifted to academia, holding professorships at Göttingen, Münster, Bonn, and finally Basel. His theological framework centered on humanity's dependence on divine revelation, rejecting human attempts to seek God independently. Post-WWII, he advocated for reconciliation and ecumenism, opposing nuclear weapons and fostering dialogue across denominational divides.
Barth’s legacy includes his ecumenical leadership in the World Council of Churches and enduring influence in theological education. The Karl Barth Society, founded in 1997, promotes his work through conferences and publications, such as the Karl Barth Complete Edition. His theological contributions remain pivotal in debates on faith, ethics, and society.
