Prof. Dr. Johannes Schelhas serves as Ordentlicher Professor für Dogmatik (Ordinary Professor of Dogmatics) and Geschäftsführender Direktor des Seminars für Dogmatik (Managing Director of the Seminar for Dogmatics) at the Faculty of Catholic Theology of the University of Bonn since 2020. Previously, he held a professorship at the Theological Faculty of Trier from 2014 to 2020. His academic career spans over two decades with significant contributions to dogmatic theology, ecumenical dialogue, and sacramental studies.

He examines the philosophical-theological implications of dogmatic theology, bridging historical theological thought with contemporary challenges. His work demonstrates deep engagement with figures like Hans Urs von Balthasar, Karl Barth, and Pavel Florenskij.
His recent publications reveal evolving interests in digital religion (particularly during the pandemic era with works on virtual presence in streamed masses), theological responses to modern technological society, and contemporary applications of traditional theological concepts. Professor Schelhas is actively involved in several academic and ecclesial organizations including the Arbeitsgemeinschaft katholische Dogmatik und Fundamentaltheologie, the Systematisch-theologischer Arbeitskreis Rhein-Main, the Joint Commission of the German Bishops' Conference and the Orthodox Bishops' Conference in Germany (since 2021), and the Bonn Center for Reconciliation Research (since 2022).
