Philip Shaul, M.D., is the holder of the Associates First Capitol Corporation Distinguished Chair in Pediatrics and Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He serves as Director of the Center for Pulmonary and Vascular Biology and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Shaul received his B.A. from Dartmouth College and M.D. from the University of Cincinnati, followed by residency training at Cincinnati Children's Medical Center and fellowship training at Brown University.
His research focuses on molecular mechanisms in vascular biology, with emphasis on endothelial cell signaling pathways involving:
- Cholesterol transport and HDL receptor function
- Non-nuclear estrogen receptor actions in cardiovascular protection
- Endothelial nitric oxide synthase regulation
- Pathogenesis of antiphospholipid antibody syndromes
- Metabolic determinants of vascular dysfunction
Publication analysis reveals consistent investigation of membrane receptor signaling (SR-BI, FcγRIIB, apoER2), sterol metabolites (27-hydroxycholesterol), and sex hormone actions in cardiovascular/pulmonary contexts. Recent work explores immunometabolic crosstalk in insulin resistance and thrombosis.
Honors include his distinguished endowed chair and presidency of the Society for Pediatric Research (2005-2006). He leads multiple research initiatives through the Shaul-Mineo Lab, investigating endothelial determinants of cardiometabolic disease.
