Dr. Philip J. 'PJ' Pettis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Michigan State University's College of Social Science. His research examines how sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, gender, age, and socioeconomic status intersect to shape social, economic, and health inequalities. He employs diverse methodologies including social network analysis, survey research, and ethnography.
Education:
Ph.D. in Sociology from Vanderbilt University (2023)
Research Focus: Dr. Pettis investigates three primary areas: 1) How social identities shape interpretations of heterosexism, 2) How objective/subjective heterosexism influences life outcomes, and 3) How social networks and contextual factors generate inequalities among sexual minorities. His work bridges medical sociology, gender studies, and stratification research.
