Philip Mote is a Professor and Senior Advisor to the Provost at Oregon State University's College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS). He previously served as Director of the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute (OCCRI) from 2009 to 2019 and remains active in climate communications.
Dr. Mote earned his BA in Physics from Harvard University and his PhD in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Washington. His academic journey has positioned him as a leading expert in regional climate modeling, particularly focused on the western United States.
Dr. Mote's research primarily centers on climate change impacts, with particular emphasis on mountain snowpack dynamics in western North America. His work has documented dramatic declines in snowpack across the region, connecting these changes to broader climate trends. He has also expanded his research to examine climate impacts on agricultural insurance losses, flood magnitudes in the Columbia River Basin, and the intersection of traditional ecological knowledge with climate science. His approach often involves sophisticated modeling techniques, including regional climate modeling, superensemble approaches, and statistical emulation to reduce model biases.
His publication record shows a clear evolution from fundamental atmospheric science toward applied climate change research with direct policy relevance. Recent work increasingly focuses on climate attribution of extreme events, drought prediction, and translating climate science for decision-makers. His research spans physical climate science, hydrological impacts, and the social dimensions of climate change.
Dr. Mote has contributed significantly to major climate assessments, including Oregon Climate Assessment Reports and the National Climate Assessments. His leadership in the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute helped establish it as a key resource for climate science in the Pacific Northwest.
While Dr. Mote is no longer actively advising PhD students and does not have active grants to support graduate students, his influence continues through his role as Senior Advisor to the Provost and through ongoing research collaborations. His work bridges the gap between climate science and practical applications for resource management and policy decisions in the Pacific Northwest.
